At snack break on the pass, the wind picks up and the body cools down: it's time to take out the fleece from the bag. Light, warm and breathable, it serves as a mid-layer under the jacket or can be worn alone in dry weather. The models range from full zips to simpler cuts, for adults as well as juniors.
The fleece sits between the technical t-shirt and the jacket. Its role is to keep the warm air close to the body while allowing the steam produced by effort to escape. It dries quickly and stays comfortable even when slightly damp, making it practical when the weather is unpredictable. In dry and calm weather, it can be worn alone. As soon as the wind blows, a jacket on top keeps the warmth in.
A thin fleece is enough for cool summer mornings and fits into any bag. A medium thickness covers spring and autumn. Thick models are used in winter or for camping when temperatures drop in the evening. The full zip, marked by the Full zip filter, allows for easy on and off and ventilation while climbing. A hood or high collar protects the neck from the wind.
Regatta offers fleeces for the whole family, Peak Mountain has models for hiking and the mountains, CMP has a wide range of cuts and thicknesses, Patagonia designs fleeces for the outdoors, and Dare 2B offers models for active outings.
Under the fleece, wear one of the technical t-shirts or breathable underwear. On top, one of the hiking jackets blocks the wind and rain. To vary warm layers, check out the sweatshirts and gilets. For bottoms, trousers and shorts complete the look, and the textile page gathers everything.
Fleeces from past seasons can be found in the hiking clearance. During sales, the hiking sales and winter sports sales also offer them at reduced prices.
A fleece badly washed tends to pill and lose its loft. Wash it inside out, with a gentle cycle, and zip it up to prevent snagging on the fabric. Avoid using a tumble dryer on high heat. Under the straps of a bag, the fleece rubs: for long days, a lightweight jacket on top protects its surface. For juniors, a full zip makes it easy to put on and take off without help during changes in pace. While camping, a thick fleece worn under a down jacket adds extra warmth when it's time to sleep.
The fleece breathes better during activity, while the down jacket provides more insulation when stationary. Many hikers wear fleece and keep the down jacket for breaks.
A standard fleece allows the wind to pass through. To protect against it, add a jacket on top.
At low temperature, inside out, without fabric softener, then air dry to keep its loft.
A thin fleece is enough for cool mornings and windy summits while remaining light in the bag.
