Rusty Surfboard TEC SD

The SD or San Diego Shortboard is the perfect shortboard Rusty, designed for the southern California coast. The SD is suitable for everything from the softer beach breaks of Del Mar and Leucadia to the hollow reef breaks of La Jolla and Sunset Cliffs. The versatility of the SD design makes it the ideal one-board quiver for your surf trip.
The origins of The SD are well documented. In June 2016, we delivered a board to Stab for one of their shaper series (Stab in the Dark), which was set to be filmed later that summer in South Africa. I wasn’t sure who the pro was. 6'0 190lbs. Maybe Jordy? But he’s a bit taller. I built a modified “Yes Thanks.” One of Josh Kerr’s models. 46. I slightly inflated the “Yes Thanks.” I moved the thickness flow and the centre of gravity a bit forward. A pretty deep single concave that goes to zero under the back fin and ends in a slight V at the tail. The mysterious surfer turned out to be Dane Reynolds. “It felt very different from other boards I’ve surfed so far,” said Dane. “It has a low rocker, hard edges, and a stubby deck. I wasn’t too keen on trying it, because of the huge Snakeskin strip along the rail and that shapeless tail. It just doesn’t look that cool. But I was surprised. It had a lot of speed and drive. I felt it was a good board. I got a few barrels, but I couldn’t make a proper turn.” It turned out that Rusty wasn’t the only one having a bit of an identity crisis. Dane actually thought the board was a Creed McTaggart model shaped by Hayden Cox. Dane surfed the board with solid authority – he ripped. A few months later, my son Clint named it SD. He tweaked it a bit. Added a bit of rock. For 5 years now, it’s been one of our most popular designs.

TEC - TORQ EPOXY COMPOSITE
Torq Epoxy Composite offers performance shapes in our ultra-modern epoxy layup. These boards provide the best balance between lightweight and durability. Thanks to our own unique laminating process, we are able to use a very strong 6oz and 4oz fiberglass layerup in a three-layer deck and a two-layer shell (with a four-layer rail overlap) with high-density EPS foam, all while achieving a board weight equivalent to that of a lightweight fiberglass layerup.
The result is a light yet very stable board with good flex properties and, like all torq, an excellent value for money.
